Where There's Food There's Friendship

Garth & Zac

Garth & Zac

Mentoring has always been an important part of Garth’s life which began in his early twenties when he first joined Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winnipeg, “It was a good experience then and was something I had always envisioned I would repeat, so here I am again!”

When Garth re-applied to be a Big Brother 5 years ago, he was matched with Zac who was 11 at the time. Zac had been on the wait list for 2 years and was both eager and a bit nervous to meet his new Big Brother. “I was kind of nervous to meet Garth for the first time and wasn’t sure what to expect,” Zac admitted.

The two hit it off almost immediately, and Garth recalled that it was Zac’s intelligence and love of eating that sealed the deal.

“Zac’s intelligence far exceeds his years. It’s not a forced conversation when we spend time together. It’s very philosophical and meaningful. We also both love to eat so food is always a very important part of the experience.”

The two have been matched for five years and the mutual respect and trust between the two friends is evident.

Over the years, the two have embarked on some very interesting adventures together but both agree that their experiences focused around food, tend to be the most memorable.

For Garth, it’s been important to expose Zac to as many possibilities and experiences, “I’ve watched Zac form meaningful opinions about his likes and dislikes over the years. It’s been very rewarding,” Garth recalled.

When asked about his experience as a Little Brother, Zac explained, “Having Garth around has meant a lot. He’s a constant friend and knows me well, and it’s good to know that I can always count on him.”

Being a Doctor, Garth has had to balance work with personal life, which he admits has come with its challenges, “Being a Big Brother, in essence a role model and mentor, is a rewarding way to be an influence in an individuals’ life. It’s meant working hard at balancing work with personal life and everything in between, but it’s so worth it in the end. I believe that seeing Zac grow into a man will be a reward that can't be bought and I am honored to be able to be a part of his life.”

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Winnipeg currently has a long wait list of boys, who need a mentor and friend just like Garth. If you know of someone in your life who you think would be a great BIG, encourage them to apply today!
