We are starting a new program which will serve youth who are in conflict with the law. Because mentoring is such a powerful method of increasing resiliency and addressing the need of recreation, belonging and support - we will soon be providing mentors to youth who are charged with non-violent offences, who are either being diverted from custody, or are incarcerated at the Manitoba Youth Centre.

Youth who have been through the system can feel lonely, isolated and often have a difficult time transitioning from custody back into the community without getting back into trouble. Having the support of a consistent and positive adult role model can provide them with the necessary tools to help prevent future offending. Mentoring our youth involved in corrections is one way that we can respond restoratively to crime; to help ensure that youth care about the members of their community - they need to know that their community cares for them.

Volunteers for this program may have a special interest in Restorative Justice, Corrections and/or the Justice System. They may have direct experience with the Youth System, or just a personal desire to make an impact in an area of tremendous need. The volunteer commitment for this program is just a couple hours once a week for a year.

One young offender had this to say about whether he thought that such a program was needed:

"It is a way of showing that the system offers you a person, who can do more one on one with you, and offer help that probation officers or bail officers are too busy to do. They can spend time that's got significance and meaning, rather than just one meeting in an office to check on you. You can go play pool, go to the beach, to movies...you can do a lot more. Plus, it's a friendly bond that teaches kids that there's nothing that is expected from them but respect, and teaches them the qualities of a good friendship bond and how to establish them in the community - and what to look for when choosing friends in the future."
