Empowering our Little Sisters is a new volunteer-based mentorship and empowering program that is driven by Aboriginal women for Aboriginal girls aged 7-15. It is primarily designed to encourage girls (primarily in the core area of the City) to gain confidence and self-esteem with a holistic approach. Cultural activities and learning experiences occur regularly for participants.
Volunteers are matched with one Little Sister at a time, for 3 months (or six activities) at a time. Each month the matches are provided with one cultural activity where families, and matches gather together to share teachings and stories, and participate directly in relevant cultural experiences. Drum making, beading, and feasting are just a few examples. The second activity during the month is exclusively for volunteers and their Littles, and will be focused on recreational group activities, such as rock climbing, horseback riding, and cooking.
Volunteers commit to spend at least one year in the program, and at times may pursue a one to one match in the community after successful participation in the group events; or, they may also have so much fun with the sense of belonging that is fostered with the group activities that they may continue with the group activities.
